New Delhi, Jan 22: Days after Google and Microsoft laid off thousands of their employees globally, now Wipro, one of India’s top IT companies, has also announced layoffs.

As per the reports, Wipro has laid off hundreds of new hires citing their poor performance. The company had recently conducted an internal performance review and employees with the lowest scores are asked to leave.

The report says that the company was expected to lay off 800 employees but Wipro said the number is lesser than that.

“We had to let go of 452 freshers after they performed poorly in assessments repeatedly even after training,” said Wipro.

“At Wipro, we take pride in holding ourselves to the highest standards. In line with the standards we aim to set for ourselves, we expect every entry-level employee to have a certain level of proficiency in their designated area of work,” said the IT company.

“The evaluation process includes assessments to align employees with the business objectives of the organisation and the needs of our customers. This systematic and comprehensive performance evaluation process involves mentoring and retraining and in some cases separation of certain employees from the company,” the company added.

Moreover, Wipro has reportedly sent a termination letter to impacted employees, saying that the employees will have to pay Rs 75,000 that the company has spent on their training. However, Wipro noted in the same mail that the company has waived off the amount.

“We wish to inform you that the training cost of Rs 75,000 which you are liable to pay, will be waived off,” the termination letter noted. Speaking to the publication, a fresher who was terminated due to poor performance said, “I had got an offer letter in January 2022, but after months of delay they onboarded me. And now they are firing me giving the excuse of the test?”

Notably, the tech industry is going through a rough time. Last week, Google and Microsoft, the two biggest tech companies, laid off their 22,000 employees globally. Both Google and Microsoft CEOs have taken full responsibility for the layoffs, hinting that the companies have been over-hiring in recent years.
