Changzhou, China: A woman in Changzhou, Jiangsu province, has reported finding a human tooth inside a meat-filled mooncake purchased from a Sam’s Club store, prompting an investigation by local authorities and the retailer. The unsettling discovery was shared on the social media platform Douyin, where the woman posted a video showing what appears to be a human molar embedded in the pastry.
In the video, a hand holds the suspected tooth, covered in meat filling, placed on a tissue next to a partially eaten mooncake. The woman can be heard saying, “My family ate this just now… Look at what they ate. It’s terrifying.” She confirmed that the tooth did not belong to anyone in her household and immediately reported the incident to the police.
Sam’s Club, a U.S.-based supermarket chain, has initiated an investigation into the matter. Meanwhile, the mooncake manufacturer has denied the possibility of contamination during production. Spokesperson Liu told Hongxing News, “It’s impossible for a tooth to be mixed into the meat filling.” Liu explained that the manufacturing process includes mincing meat and scanning it with X-ray machines designed to detect bone fragments. He emphasized the company’s decade-long history of safe production without any such incidents.
The manufacturer has provided surveillance footage to Sam’s Club and the Changzhou market regulatory department for review. The incident has sparked a range of reactions online, from shock to dark humor. One social media user quipped, “Mooncake: now with meat and a side of calcium!” Another suggested the tooth might belong to someone in the woman’s family, noting, “It’s possible to lose part of a tooth without feeling any pain, so they might not even realize it’s missing.”
Sam’s Club has faced food safety concerns in China before. In 2022, a woman from Fujian province claimed her uncle found three artificial human teeth inside Swiss rolls bought from one of the chain’s stores, allegedly causing him to break his own teeth. The store promised an investigation, but no definitive findings were made public.
The current incident has raised questions about food safety protocols and quality control measures. Local authorities continue to investigate, and Sam’s Club has expressed its commitment to resolving the issue promptly.
