Daltonganj, Aug 12: A lady identified as Pooja Kumari (23), travelling with her husband Vivek Rajan by 18635 Up Ranchi-Sasaram Intercity Express train last night, delivered a healthy girl child at platform number 1 of the Daltonganj railway station under the East Central railway of the Dhanbad division.
“The mother and infant both are fine,” said noted gynaecologist Dr Archana Tiwary of MMCH Daltonganj.
“The girl weighed 2.8 kgs. The delivery was ‘spontaneous’ and ended well and smoothly,” added Dr Archana. She said the third stage of post-delivery was suitably taken care of.
Sources said the Daltonganj railway station officials, town police, Palamu civil surgeon Dr John F Kennedy and the team of the MMCH Daltonganj led by Dr Archana Tiwary did a wonderful job. They all are being profusely hailed by the common people.
Pooja Kumari and her husband Vivek Rajan had boarded the Ranchi-Sasaram intercity express train at Ranchi for Sasaram on the evening of Thursday, August 11.
The lady developed labour pain soon after the train left Ranchi for the destination. She bore the labour pain as far as possible.
However, when it became unbearable then she and her husband decided to terminate their journey to Sasaram midway and got down from the train at Daltonganj railway station last night. The train was running around one hour late.
The women staff of the Daltonganj railway station soon cordoned off a small space for the lady with all the makeshift arrangements for privacy and she delivered the baby on the platform.
A railway porter phoned the station superintendent Anil Kumar Tiwary about this episode. Tiwary then called Palamu civil surgeon Dr John F Kennedy.
The officer in charge of the Daltonganj police station Abhay Kumar Sinha and his team was also monitoring the development. All were for providing as much comfort as possible to this lady passenger.
Speaking to lagatar24.com late at night around 10.25 pm, Palamu CS Dr John F Kennedy said, “I got almost simultaneous calls from the station superintendent Anil Kumar Tiwary and police officer Abhay Kumar Sinha.”
“I called our gynaecologist Dr Archana Tiwary asking her to take the nurse, and staff and rush to the railway station in an ambulance. Every one of them was in readiness,” said Dr Kennedy.
Senior GNM Chanchala Kumari, staff Haider Ali etc took the ambulance and reached Daltonganj railway station where GNM Chanchala Kumari took command of the mother and her baby.
Back at the MMCH Daltonganj, barely two kilometres away from Daltonganj railway station, Dr Archana Tiwary and her team were prepared to handle the mother and her infant.
Kennedy said the couple took a wrong decision when they boarded the intercity express train at Ranchi as Pooja has had her ‘full term’. “Her EDD (expected date of delivery) was August 22 and Pooja ought not to have taken such a journey from Ranchi to Sasaram,” opined Dr Kennedy.
“However, the couple took a wise decision to get down at Daltonganj railway station where everyone got onto the job professionally. It is God’s grace that she delivered spontaneously and no surgical procedure was needed,” Dr Kennedy added.
The civil surgeon further said, “Pooja told us this baby is their second girl child. Her elder girl child is a little over 2 years. It is a great ‘Beti Bachao’ job for us.”
Dr Archana Tiwary said the mother and child are under medical observation for 24 hours before their request only she will be discharged from the MMCH Daltonganj today.
The infant was also given the maiden shots of the immunisation of the BCG, Hepatitis B and oral polio vaccination.
