Dhanbad, July 13: In an unprecedented situation, SSLNT Women’s College Principal Dr Sharmila Rani has refused to hand over the charge to the new principal after she was transferred to BSK College Maithon a week back.

BBMKU VC Dr Sukhdeo Bhoi had on July 6 reshuffled principals of four colleges.

Dr Sharmila Rani was transferred to BSK College Maithon while Dr Sarita Srivastava was appointed principal of Degree College Bermo (Bokaro). Dr Rani was replaced by Dr Ashok Kumar Maji while Dr Kavita Singh was transferred to PK Roy Memorial College.

Three designated principals, Dr Sarita Srivastava, Dr Kavita Singh and Dr Ashok Kumar Maji assumed their new responsibility as per notification issued by the VC.

But Dr Sharmila Rani has refused to obey the VC’s order.

A university official said that Dr Ashok Kumar Maji had gone to take charge but Dr Sharmila Rani refused to give him the charge. Even the VC talked to her on the telephone but she reportedly said that she would follow the directive of the Governor against her transfer.

University authorities are tight-lipped on the issue but a retired senior professor said that such a violation of the notification issued by the VC had never happened. “Dr Sharmila Rani should have first joined on a new assignment and sent representation to the Chancellor thereafter. But she violated the official order. If she was against her transfer, she should have gone on leave to avoid direct confrontation with the VC who is the supreme authority,” said a retired professor.

Dr Sharmila Rani is the lone Commission-appointed serving principal in BBMKU.

In 2017, the JPSC had appointed 16 principals in the universities of Jharkhand, among them seven principals were allocated to Vinoba Bhave University (VBU) Hazaribag.

In the meantime, BBMKU Dhanbad also became a separate university from VBU. The then VBU VC Dr Ramesh Sharan gave two principals, Dr BK Sinha and Dr Renuka Thakur out of seven in the BBMKU quota. Dr BK Sinha was made principal of PK Roy Memorial College while Dr Renuka was appointed at SSLNT Women’s College.

Dr Sharmila Rani was appointed principal of Giridih Women’s College under VBU. But a few months later she got her transfer to Sindri College under BBMKU after the retirement of Dr Kamta Singh, Sindri College principal.

When Dr Renuka Thakur got her transfer to Ranchi, Dr Sharmila Rani also got transferred to SSLNT College Dhanbad as principal from Sindri.

Prof SK Agrawal (1977 batch) and Prof SKL Das (1978 batch) were senior most teachers when BBMKU became a separate university in 2017.  Being senior most Dr SKL Das was the principal of PK Roy Memorial College when Dr BK Sinha came as a Commission appointed principal. Sources said Prof Das was first offered principal’s charge of RSP College Jharia but he refused.

When Dr Kamta Singh retired, Prof Das was again offered Sindri College but in the meantime, Dr Sharmila Rani got her transfer there from Giridih.

Now all eyes are set on the action of the VC.
