Mount Maunganui, March 6: India won their first match of the 2022 Women’s World Cup by 107 runs against Pakistan at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui to get the tournament off to a flying start.

To keep the scoring rate under control while defending a 245-run target, the Indian bowlers held a tight line and length throughout their run-chase. Jhulan Goswami and Sneh Rana both took two wickets, but Rajeshwari Gayakwad was the most lethal bowler, taking four wickets in her quota of ten overs.

Earlier, India’s batting battled back to post a respectable 244/7 in 50 overs. Smriti Mandhana, Sneh Rana, and Pooja Vastrakar each struck half-centuries as the innings total surpassed 240 runs. Despite losing wickets frequently, India scored easily towards the conclusion of the innings, with Rana and Pooja adding 100 runs for the seventh wicket.

Nida Dar and Nashra Sandhu each took two wickets for Pakistan. Mithali Raj, who had chosen to bat, won the toss. India, who finished second in the 2017 and 2005 World Cups, are hungry to take the next step and win the championship that has evaded them, especially skipper Mithali Raj and veteran pacer Jhulan Goswami, who are playing their final World Cup.
