Lucknow, Nov 1: Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo and former UP Chief Minister, Akhilesh Yadav on Monday said he will not be contesting the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls early next year. Azamgarh MP Akhilesh Yadav said that the SP will form an alliance with smaller parties.
“Talks are on with the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) on alliance and seat-sharing,” said Yadav.
Notably, in the 2017 UP assembly elections Samajwadi Party had failed to retain power and had bagged only 47 seats. The 2017 Uttar Pradesh assembly polls was in the favor of BJP, who won the election by winning a whopping 312 seats after which Yogi Adityanath was made the Chief Minister of the state.
To defeat BJP in the upcoming election, Akhilesh Yadav’s party has forged alliance with Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP), a former BJP ally-turned-rival. Interestingly, the president of SBSP Om Prakash Rajbhar was a minister in the Yogi Adityanath government, but was dismissed by Adityanath in 2019. This removal came after he accused the state government of not doing enough for the backward castes.
On Sunday also, addressing a meeting in Hardoi the SP chief said, “All sections of people have made up their minds to elect an SP government in the assembly elections, following which Uttar Pradesh will get back on the path to growth and prosperity”.
He also said that the present UP government has only one thing to do that is renaming the works carried out by the previous SP government.
