New Delhi, June 12: Viktor Axelsen of Denmark won the men’s singles title at the Indonesia Masters on Sunday, defeating Chou Tien-chen of Taiwan in straight sets.

In a 41-minute encounter in Jakarta’s Istora sporting arena, the world number one defeated Chou 21-10, 21-12. Axelsen won after defeating Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, a local favourite, in the semi-finals.

Chen Yufei of China defeated Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon in the women’s singles to earn her first championship since winning gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

In a 74-minute three-set match, she defeated Ratchanok, the 2020 Indonesia Masters women’s champion, 21-16, 18-21, 21-15.

“I am very pleased to get the gold medal today. I faced some difficulties during the game but I’m very pleased to overcome them and secure the win,” world number four Chen said.

Chen advanced to the final after defeating compatriot He Bingjiao in the semi-finals 21-17, 21-14. Following the Indonesia Masters, the Indonesia Open will begin on June 14 and go until June 19.

After nearly three years without live audiences in the Indonesian capital owing to the coronavirus pandemic, badminton enthusiasts were looking forward to the back-to-back events.
