New Delhi, Feb 14: The Women’s Premier League will set a model for other sports to follow, just like it did with the men’s Indian Premier League, according to Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah, and it will transform how people view women’s cricket.

“The WPL is going to revolutionise the way we look at women’s cricket. The huge success of the WPL auction has not only given an opportunity to many prospective talent to showcase their skills on the big stage but also to young budding cricketers to take centerstage on a global level. The reception from fans around the world has been overwhelmingly positive and this will only continue to grow as the league matures,” he said.

“The WPL will set a template for other sports to follow suit. We saw what happened with the men’s IPL and how other sporting leagues cropped up after 2008. The WPL will ensure the growth of multi-genre sport among women,” he added.

According to Shah, the WPL was established to encourage the next generation of women to pursue professional sports as a career option as well as to provide a platform for women to exhibit and improve their cricket in India and throughout the world.

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) inaugural season auction was performed successfully on Monday. The league’s first season will be contested in Mumbai from March 4 to March 26 at two different venues.

A total of 1,525 participants registered for the first WPL auction, and only 409 made the cut.

The three IPL team owners, Adani Group, and Capri Global, along with the Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Delhi Capitals franchises, purchased the five teams for a total of INR 4669.9 crore (about USD 572.78 million).
