New Delhi: Rajasthan Royals’ rising sensation, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, etched his name in IPL history on Monday by slamming a breathtaking century against Gujarat Titans at Jaipur’s Sawai Mansingh Stadium.
Former India coach Ravi Shastri was among those who couldn’t hide their admiration. Reflecting on the young batter’s first appearance, Shastri said, “That very first shot against Lucknow left everyone in sheer disbelief,” according to the ICC.
Handling Early Success
Shastri stressed that while Suryavanshi’s potential is clear, it is equally important to allow him space to fail and learn. “He’s just beginning his journey. Youngsters will stumble, and the real measure will be how he adapts when bowlers come up with new strategies,” Shastri remarked.
Challenges Ahead
The cricket veteran further warned that opposition teams would soon target Suryavanshi with short-pitched deliveries, putting his temperament and technique under the scanner. “Once you send the first ball flying for six, mercy goes out the window. Whether 14, 20 or 30 years old — you get treated the same,” Shastri added.
Record-Breaking Performance
Suryavanshi, at just 18, became the youngest player ever to smash a T20 hundred, overtaking Maharashtra’s Vijay Zol. His innings of 101 runs came off just 38 balls, including seven boundaries and 11 towering sixes. He completed his century in only 35 balls — the second-fastest century in IPL history, trailing only Chris Gayle’s iconic 30-ball century.
Rajasthan Royals secured a comfortable eight-wicket win over Gujarat Titans, with Suryavanshi’s fearless batting serving as the highlight of the night.
