Ranchi, Sept.29: The youth whom police had arrested on Wednesday for allegedly damaging the idol of Lord Hanuman at Main Road was sent to Birsa Munda Central Jail.

The development took place after the police produced him before the court of chief judicial magistrate Mithilesh Kumar Singh, and the court took him in judicial custody. The judicial remand is till October 13.

The name for the youth surfaced as Rameez Ahmad, a resident of New Tiwari Tank Road under Hindpiri police station area.

As the youth was sent to jail, those whose religious sentiment got hurt, heaved a sigh of relief.

“It is good the police sent him to jail. Though it was being said he was lunatic, it was hard to believe as he chose festival time to break open the temple gate to damage the idol during night hours. The matter required thorough probe and it is required to be probed whether he is really mad or he is playing mad or someone using his madness to disturb the city,” a Hindpiri resident, who used to visit that temple regularly, said.

Another Hindpiri resident said the police action has helped control the situation.

“Ranchi is a communally sensitive place. A section of people love spreading hate messages. They immediately start dividing people on communal lines once any incident of crime takes place at any religious place in the city. Though the youth who is in police custody for damaging the idol of Lord Hanuman is under treatment of CIP doctors and he had also damaged Imambara near Gwala Toli and had left his house saying he would also damage the mosque, the action of police is not wrong. It will help stop speculation and allow police to probe the matter properly,” the resident said.
