New Delhi, July 26: 19 opposition MPs have been expelled from Rajya Sabha for the remainder of the week, for today’s disruption of the session.
The most recent wave of suspensions came one day after four Congress MPs in the Lok Sabha were given similar treatment for the duration of the monsoon session, which ends on August 12, for carrying signs within the chamber despite Speaker Om Birla’s warnings to behave.

The suspended opposition MPs refused to leave and kept up their protests, thus the chamber was postponed for an hour today.
The opposition’s rage at the government over what they allege was an effort to silence voices that questioned the ruling alliance’s economic and social policies would probably increase as a result of the action against the 19 Rajya Sabha MPs.
For the past several days, opposition MPs in Rajya Sabha have been agitating for an immediate discussion on matters including price increases and the increase in the goods and services tax, or GST.
The opposition is requesting that Rule 267 be used for the discussions (Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Rajya Sabha). According to this rule, the listed business for the day is suspended while the subject is discussed.
