Bengaluru: A hidden pothole on Bengaluru’s Varthur Road led to a serious accident that left Aishani Khanna, a private-sector employee, with a crushed ankle, requiring emergency plastic surgery and a five-day hospital stay costing nearly Rs 2 lakh, after her scooter hit the pothole while she was riding to office last month.

Khanna Shares Ordeal on Social Media, Appeals for Road Repairs

Khanna shared her experience on X, describing how the hidden pothole on Varthur Road left her with a crushed ankle, requiring emergency plastic surgery, five days in hospital, and a bill of Rs 1.97 lakh, warning that the same incident could happen to anyone and urging authorities to fix the roads immediately.

Accident Occurred on Whitefield-Varthur Road Near Nexus Mall

The accident took place on the Whitefield-Varthur road near Nexus Mall on August 20. Khanna had taken the Varthur route to run an errand on her way to office and was riding cautiously due to the road’s known poor condition, but one pothole went unnoticed. She recalled that it was raining heavily around noon when her two-wheeler hit the pothole, sending her airborne for two to three seconds before she fell with the scooter landing on top of her, resulting in seven to eight deep cuts and abrasions on her left ankle that required specialised plastic surgery.

Second Surgery May Be Required, Recovery Ongoing

Following the accident, Khanna spent five days in hospital, incurring a medical bill of Rs 1.97 lakh, with the possibility that she may need a second surgery depending on how her recovery progresses.

Khanna Describes Physical and Emotional Toll

Beyond the physical injuries, Khanna said the ordeal brought significant mental trauma and financial burden, describing the entire experience as entirely avoidable and uncalled for.

Long-Time Resident Calls Civic Infrastructure a ‘Sad State of Affairs’

Having lived in Bengaluru for 30 years, Khanna said she has watched the city’s road conditions steadily worsen over time, describing the current state as having virtually no proper roads, only potholes, and appealed to the government to ensure better infrastructure going forward.

City’s Poor Road Infrastructure a Persistent Source of Criticism

Bengaluru’s civic infrastructure has frequently drawn public criticism, with residents regularly voicing anger over pothole-ridden roads and inefficient traffic management in what is often referred to as India’s Silicon Valley. Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has on several occasions assured residents that efforts were underway to fill potholes across the city.
