New Delhi, Feb 4: A Delhi court released Sharjeel Imam on Saturday in connection with the violence that occurred at Jamia Millia Islamia in December 2019. Additional Sessions JudgeArul Verma of the Saket courts also discharged Asif Iqbal Tanha in the same case.
The Delhi Police charged Tanha and Imam with rioting, unlawful assembly, and a number of other offences listed in the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The FIR alleges offences of rioting and unlawful assembly – Section 143, 147, 148, 149, 186, 353, 332, 333, 308, 427, 435, 323, 341, 120B and 34 of IPC have been invoked in the case.
However, Imam continues to be detained in connection with additional FIRs filed against him over the 2020 North-East Delhi riots. Imam and Tanha are both charged in the Special Cell’s case, which contends that the riots in Northeast Delhi in 2020 were the result of a bigger conspiracy.
Detailed copy of the order is awaited.
