Istanbul, Nov 23: A magnitude-6.1 earthquake that hit northwest Turkey early on Wednesday injured at least 22 people. According to the US Geological Survey, the shallow tremor occurred roughly 170 kilometres (105 miles) east of Istanbul, the largest city in the nation.
Suleyman Soylu, the interior minister, tweeted that there was no word of any fatalities.
According to a tweet from the health minister Fahrettin Koca, 22 people were hurt, one of them suffered critical injuries after jumping from a building in a fit of rage.
Despite being felt very strongly in Istanbul, the centre of the earthquake, according to Turkish authorities, was in the Golyaka district of the Duzce province.
The AFAD, Turkey’s disaster agency, reported controlled blackouts in the Duzce region but cautioned locals not to become alarmed.
Turkey is located in one of the seismically active regions of the planet. In January 2020, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck Elazig, killing around 40 people.
This occurred two days after a 5.6 magnitude earthquake briefly shook Java, the largest island in Indonesia, on Monday afternoon, killing at least 268 people and injuring over 700 more.
