Hyderabad: In a tragic incident, 27-year-old Praveen Kumar Gampa, a student from Telangana, was shot dead in Wisconsin, USA, during a suspected robbery attempt on Wednesday. His family in India came to know about the incident when a stranger answered Praveen’s phone call, raising immediate concerns. Later, friends and US authorities confirmed the shocking news.

Family Learns About the Tragedy Through a Stranger

The shooting reportedly took place near Praveen’s residence, where unidentified assailants opened fire. His father, Raghavulu, mentioned that he had missed a WhatsApp call from Praveen on Wednesday morning. When he tried calling back, a stranger answered, stating that he had found Praveen’s phone. This left the family deeply worried.

According to Praveen’s cousin, Arun, some friends informed them that his body was found with bullet wounds. There are also speculations that he was shot dead inside a store, but official confirmation is awaited.

Consulate Extends Condolences and Assistance

The Consulate General of India in Chicago expressed deep condolences over Praveen’s tragic death. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), they stated:

“We are saddened by the untimely death of Praveen Kumar Gampa, a postgraduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The Consulate is in contact with Praveen’s family and the University, helping them with all possible support. Our heartfelt condolences and prayers are with his family and friends.”

Praveen Had Moved to the US for Higher Studies

Praveen had moved to the US in 2023 to pursue a master’s degree in data science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He was also working part-time at a local store when the tragic incident occurred.

The investigation into his death is ongoing, and further details are awaited.

Similar Incidents Raising Concerns

This is not the first such tragedy involving an Indian student in the US. In December last year, 22-year-old Sai Teja, another student from Telangana, was shot dead by armed men at a petrol pump in Chicago.
