Imphal, August 5: At least three persons died in the Bishnupur district of Manipur after new violence erupted late last night, authorities said on Saturday.

Manipur police had earlier on Thursday indicated that there was tension there and that the atmosphere was tense.  There have been sporadic instances of shooting and crowd gathering, according to a press release from the police on August 3.

The state Cabinet recommended that Governor Anusuiya Uikey call a session of the Assembly on August 21 in response to the Opposition’s call for the imposition of President’s Rule in view of the ethnic conflict and violence that have torn Manipur apart for the better part of three months at this point.

The Northeast state has been gripped by violence, which has so far claimed over 100 deaths and forced thousands of people to flee their homes.  Days after the Manipur High Court requested on May 3 that the state administration take into consideration adding the Metei group, which makes up the majority of the state, to the list of Scheduled Tribes, conflict broke out between the Metei and Kuki tribes.

“The state cabinet has recommended to the Governor for summoning the 4th session of the 12th Manipur legislative assembly on 21st August 2023,” read a notification issued on August 4.

I.N.D.I.A, the opposition alliance, recently paid a two-day visit to Manipur where they met residents who had been displaced in relief camps and paid a visit to Governor Uikey.
