Dhanbad, Sept 2: As many as 32 seats are still vacant in the five state-owned medical colleges, as the candidates of the State as well as all India quota look reluctant to take admissions here.
The Jharkhand government-run five medical colleges (barring RIMS Ranchi) have total 500 MBBS seats (100 seats each) in which 15% (75 seats) are reserved for all India quota and two for the central nominees.
But after completion of the second counselling of the all India quota seats on August 28, only 43 candidates out of 75 took admission in medical colleges of the State.
The highest 11 all India quota candidates out of 15 took admission at Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH) Dhanbad and the lowest 6 at Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) Hazaribagh .
SNMMCH admission in-charge Dr Ganesh Kumar said after completion of the 2nd counselling only 4 seats are vacant.
At Medinirai Medical College Hospital (MMCH) Palamu, admission in-charge Dr Atul Prakash said that total 10 candidates out of 15 took admission. He expressed hope that remaining 5 seats would be filled up in the mop up round.
At Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College Hospital (MGMMCH) Jamshedpur, total 9 candidates took admission under the all India quota. Principal Dr KN Singh said that nine candidates took admission on all India quota seats while one seat was filled up with the central nominee from Nagaland.
Principal of Phulo Jhano Medical College Dumka Dr Arun Kumar Choudhary said total 7 candidates took admissions under the All-India quota and 8 seats are still vacant. At SBMCH Hazaribagh, only six students took admission.
However, director medical education of state Dr SK Singh contradicted that candidates are reluctant to take admission in the Jharkhand medical colleges. “Admission is taken on basis of ranking. Higher ranking first takes admission in RIMS followed by other institutions. Moreover, last years all the seats in the state except 2 handicapped seats had been filled up. So, it is wrong to say students are not interested in Jharkhand medical colleges,” he said.
Principal of a medical college said that students avoid to take admission in initial stage due to up gradation choice but all the seats are filled up finally. The principal said due to faculty deficiencies a candidate first selects RIMS, followed by MGMMCH, SNMMCH, SBMCH, PJMCH and finally MMCH.
