Raipur: Four Maoists were killed in an intense encounter with security forces in the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh late Saturday. The clash, which took place in the dense forests of south Abujhmaad near the border of Narayanpur and Dantewada districts, also claimed the life of District Reserve Guard (DRG) Head Constable Sannu Karam, officials confirmed.
Encounter Details
The firefight erupted during an anti-Maoist operation led by a joint team of security personnel. The exchange of fire continued late into the night, following which the bodies of four Maoists were recovered. Security forces also seized automatic weapons, including an AK-47 rifle and a self-loading rifle (SLR), from the site.
A search operation is ongoing in the area to ensure no remaining Maoist operatives pose a threat.
Government’s Anti-Maoist Crackdown
The incident comes amidst the Union government’s intensified efforts to root out Maoist activities in the region. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has set an ambitious target to eliminate Maoist insurgency by March 2026.
In 2024, security forces killed over 200 Maoists in Chhattisgarh, with 217 of them from the Bastar region, comprising Dantewada, Kanker, Sukma, Bijapur, Narayanpur, Kondagaon, and Bastar districts. Additionally, over 800 Maoists were arrested, and 802 others surrendered last year.
