Chandigarh, June 2: The Punjab government said on Thursday, five days after musician Sidhu Moose Wala was shot dead as his security cover was revoked, that security protection for around 420 VVIPs will be restored starting June 7.

The administration of the Aam Aadmi Party, or AAP, informed the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which was hearing a case by former minister OP Soni, who is one of the 424 people whose security cover has been revoked.

Since the assassination of Sidhu Moose Wala, the Punjab administration, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has been chastised for reducing protection for VVIPs.

In response to a question from the high court on why security coverage was reduced, the Punjab government stated it needed the security personnel for the anniversary of Operation Bluestar on June 6, which was a military offensive in June 1984 to clear terrorists who had dug in in the Golden Temple.

Following today’s court proceedings, the BJP quickly pointed out that the AAP, whose national leader Arvind Kejriwal is frequently portrayed as a leading anti-corruption figure, has reversed its position after citing the end of VIP culture as the reason for reducing security for hundreds of people in the border state.
