Ranchi, June 9: The Jharkhand High Court on Thursday took suo-moto cognizance of the murder of Manpreet Singh in Jamshedpur’s  Sidhgora.

The court of Chief Justice Dr Ravi Ranjan and Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad have taken notice of this matter and asked for a response from the state administration.

The court has asked the state government whether or not a witness protection programme exists in the state. What efforts has the government taken, if any, to ensure the safety of witnesses?

The government has until June 27 to file an affidavit, according to the court.

Manpreet Singh, a young man from Jamshedpur’s Sidgora, was slain on Wednesday after he returned home from a court hearing. The killer broke open his house’s door and shot him dead in front of his mother in Jamshedpur. According to her mother, she kept calling the police for 30 minutes but no one turned up for her son’s rescue.
