Kyiv, June 10: Ukraine’s southern city of Mariupol is at risk of a catastrophic cholera outbreak since medical services are likely already near collapse, according to Britain’s defence ministry.

In Kherson, there is likely to be a critical shortage of medicines, according to a tweet from the British Ministry of Defence.

“Medical services in Mariupol are likely already near collapse: a major cholera outbreak in Mariupol will exacerbate this further,” reads the tweet.

“Ukraine suffered a major cholera epidemic in 1995, and has experienced minor outbreaks since, especially around the Azov Sea coast – which includes Mariupol,” it added.

It went on to say that Russia is struggling to provide basic public services to the people living in Russian-occupied regions.

Dorit Nitzan, WHO’s Ukraine Incident Manager, warned last month that Mariupol, which is currently under Russian control after weeks of siege and severe bombing, was one of the seized areas where cholera was a risk.
