New Delhi, June 28: Varinder Singh, an Olympic and World Cup medalist who played a key role in some of India’s greatest victories in the 1970s, passed away on Tuesday morning in Jalandhar. He was 75.

Singh was a member of the Indian hockey team that won the gold medal at the men’s hockey World Cup held in Kuala Lumpur in 1975. This is still India’s only gold medal from the illustrious competition, as the nation defeated Pakistan 2-1 in the championship match. Singh also competed for the teams that won the bronze medal at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich and the silver medal in the 1973 World Cup in Amsterdam.

He also won a silver medal at the Asian Games in 1974 and 1978, respectively. The legendary Indian hockey player competed in the 1975 Olympics in Montreal. The coveted Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Varinder in 2007.
