Dhanbad, July 7: Binod Bihari Mahto Koylanchal University (BBMKU) will press in around 1.5 lakhs students of all the constituent and affiliated colleges of twin districts Dhanbad and Bokaro in the campaign against single-use plastic.

Dean of Students Welfare (DSW) of BBMKU Dr Debjanai Biswas while launching the ambitious campaign said that awareness of people against the use of single-use plastic and its elimination programme has been kick-started from the university headquarters level with NSS volunteers. But students and teachers of constituent and affiliated colleges would be involved in making the campaign effective.

BBMKU is the first among the seven universities in the state that has launched a massive programme against single-use plastic involving students force.

“Activists (students) of the campaign would not only be aware people against impact of single-use plastic on health and environment but also collect scattered plastic and destroy. Under the campaign students would focus on convincing particularly housewives, big and small traders, vendors and other stakeholders in an urban and rural area about it,” said DSW Dr Biswas.

BBMKU has 10 constituent colleges and 18 affiliated units in Dhanbad and Bokaro including 2 engineering colleges, one medical college and university departments. Over 1.5 lakh students are enrolled in these institutions.

BBMKU NSS coordinator Dr Mausuf Ahmed said that the programme began on Wednesday at university headquarters. NSS activists and students made people aware and collected single-use plastic scattered in the area.

On the occasion, DSW Dr Biswas along with examination controller Dr SK Barnbal, brand ambassador of NSS Ranveer Sharma and students including Santosh Kumar, Priya Singh, Jitendra Kumar, and others took the oath not to use single-use plastic.

“Letter would be sent to all constituent and affiliated colleges of the university for launching similar drive in their respective region,” said Dr Mausuf Ahmed, who has taken the campaign as a challenge.
