New Delhi, July 14: The co-founder of the fact-checking website Alt News, Mohammed Zubair, has filed a petition in the Supreme Court to quash six first information reports (FIRs) against him that the Uttar Pradesh Police had filed against him.
Zubair has also challenged the constitutional validity of Special Investigation Team (SIT) that the UP government established to look into the six cases.
The SIT was established by the government of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday to look into the six charges that had been filed against Zubair in various State districts.
Preetinder Singh, the Inspector General of Police (Prisons), is in charge of the SIT, which also includes Amit Verma, the Deputy Inspector General of Police.
In six different cities—Hathras, Ghaziabad, Muzaffarnagar, Lakhimpur Kheri, and Sitapur—cases have been filed against Zubair.
Cases involving the fact-tweets checker’s have been filed in Sitapur and Lakhimpur Kheri.
After he posted a tweet labelling Mahant Bajrang Muni, Yati Narsinghanand, and Swami Anand Swaroop as “hate mongers,” a lawsuit was filed against Zubair in Sitapur for hurting religious sensibilities.
In the Sitapur FIR, the Supreme Court had given him interim bail.
