Dhanbad, Aug 17: In a sudden raid conducted in the Dhanbad juvenile home at the wee hour of Wednesday, the internal security team recovered 12 mobile phones including four androids, eight chargers, and six earphones, five small knives and an iron piece from different wards.

Col JK Singh, the nodal officer of juvenile home internal security who led the team, said the raid was carried out at 4.45 am on Wednesday to catch the inmates off-guard. In a three-hour operation, several banned items were recovered from different wards. Besides phone sets and chargers, the team also recovered four data cables and one screwdriver. An iron piece was also recovered which could be used for harming others.

The raid was conducted in the wake of the assault of an inmate on August 13 by other juveniles. The injured inmate had to be admitted to Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH) for better treatment.

“We decided to strike at such time (4.45 am) so that no one anticipates it. A team comprising deputy superintendent of juvenile home Santosh Prasad, Upendra Roy, Kundan Sharma and 21 police forces was formed. Before entering the building, we took major precautions such as getting the light of the verandah off and entered silently. After getting a position in the building in dark, we turned the lights on. Since they were sleeping, we woke them up one by one and assembled everyone in one place,” said Col JK Singh.

He said the sudden inspection was made after taking permission from the deputy commissioner, superintendent of police and child social welfare department.
