Ex-JSCA boss Amitabh Choudhary cremated with state honours

Ranchi, Aug 17: The last rites of ex-JSCA president and former IPS officer, Amitabh Choudhary (62), was performed at the Harmu Muktidham cremation ground here on Wednesday afternoon where people, politicians and cricket lovers offered their heartfelt tribute.

The last rites were performed by son Abhishek Choudhary amid state honours. Wife Nirmala Kaur and daughter Niyati besides two sisters of the deceased cricket boss were present during the last rites.

Amitabh Choudhary died due to a massive cardiac arrest on Tuesday morning. His untimely demise left people shocked. His body was taken at the JSCA stadium for people to offer tribute. Chief Minister Hemant Soren, minister Mithilesh Thakur, JMM MP Mahua Maji, BJP MLA Biranchi Narayan, Jharkhand Congress president Rajesh Thakur, JSCA president Sanjay Sahay and many other dignitaries were present during last rites.

A condolence meeting was held at Jharkhand Police headquarters at Dhurwa. DGP Neeraj Sinha and other officials shared memories of their association with Amitabh Choudhary and said that his death has caused irreplaceable damage to cricket and Jharkhand.

Born on July 6, 1960 at Manigachi block in Darbhanga of Bihar, he completed his B. Tech from IIT Kharagpur. The next year he was selected for Indian Police Service. He served as SSP of Ranchi in 1997.

Amitabh Choudhary was a name to reckon with in the field of sports specially cricket. He became a member of the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) BCCI in 2002. In 2005 he defeated the then deputy chief minister Sudesh Mahto and became the president of Jharkhand State Cricket Association. He served as manager of the team India from 2005-09. He also served as acting secretary of the BCCI. He took voluntary retirement from the job in 2013 and joined politics. He unsuccessfully contested the parliamentary election from Ranchi seat as the JVM candidate.
