New Delhi, Sept 22: Following the death of Mahsa Amini (22) just days after being detained by Iran’s morality police, protests in the country grew more violent on Wednesday, according to a report from a US-based media outlet. Protesters threw stones over security personnel.

As Iran’s persecution of tight dress regulations for women continued, protesters burnt automobiles and shouted anti-government chants.

According to CBS, who cited Iranian state media, police dispersed crowds of up to 1,000 people on Wednesday as street protests extended to 15 cities by using tear gas and arrests.

Notably, Mahsa Amini was detained by the specialised police unit while visiting Tehran with her family, according to Al Jazeera. After some time in jail, she experienced a heart attack and was quickly transferred to the hospital with the help of the emergency services.

Following the passing of Mahsa Amini, several female demonstrators who opposed the need that women wear hijabs cut their hair and set their hijabs on fire. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi instructed the interior minister to launch an investigation into the incident after it prompted outrage on social media.

Amini’s passing occurs as debate over the actions of Iran’s morality police, officially known as the Gasht-e Ershad, is growing both inside and outside of the country (Guidance Patrol). Women must cover their neck and hair with a headscarf in accordance with the mandated dress code, which is applicable to people of all ethnicities and religions, not just Iranian Muslims, according to Al Jazeera.

Women have resisted putting headscarves far back on their heads to show off their hair over the years, especially in large cities.
