New Delhi, Sept 22: The Supreme Court on Thursday reserved its decision in a series of appeals challenging the Karnataka High Court decision on the hijab ban after a 10-day hearing on religion and the Popular Front of India’s (PFI) role in the case.

The apex court was hearing pleas challenging Karnataka HC’s order that upheld a government order (GO) of the State of Karnataka effectively enabling government colleges in the State to ban the wearing of the hijab by Muslim girl students on college campuses.

Over ten days, a bench made up of Justices Hemant Gupta and Sudhanshu Dhulia heard all of the parties, including twenty-one lawyers for the appellants and five for the respondents.

“We have heard you all. Now our homework starts. Thank you very much,” the bench said.

The Karnataka High Court order from March 15 upholding the Karnataka government order was challenged before the Supreme Court.

Muslim female students from various colleges in Karnataka who had been denied permission to attend class because they were wearing the hijab filed petitions with the High Court.
