Ranchi, Oct 27: Dr Avinash Gupta, a native of Ranchi and a graduate of the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) has been honoured with the humanitarian award by Monmouth Medical Center-Southern Campus, New Jersey, USA, for his exemplary work in public health and social service, especially for COVID-19 related relief and humanitarian work in India and the US.

He is the Chief of Cardiology and President-elect of the medical staff at Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus (MMCSC) in New Jersey, USA.

“Being involved with community groups and helping others has always been my passion. Community service is very rewarding and fulfilling. It has enriched me as a person,” Gupta said in a press release.

Gupta, along with a group of 50 medical experts, administered vaccinations to 3,500 Indian-Americans in Ocean County, New Jersey, during the pandemic. In 2021, when he served as president of MOCAAPI (Monmouth and Ocean AAPI Chapter), the group gave USD 150,000 to Fulfill, a food bank serving the counties of Monmouth and Ocean.

Dr Avinash Gupta treated nearly 1,000 patients alongside his wife, Dr Geeta Gupta, which helped relieve the strain on overcrowded hospitals. According to a news statement published here, he had also contributed more than USD 250,000 for medical relief in India and assisted AASTHA, a Patna-based NGO, in establishing a 10-bed COVID Care Center.

Dr Gupta worked with other physicians to arrange for the shipment of oxygen concentrators and medications to India. He virtually cared for many Indians living in the US during the epidemic who had health insurance and were unable to visit a hospital because of the COVID-19 lockdown.

Randhir Jaiswal, the consul general of India in New York, congratulated Dr Gupta on the honour and noted that the community had observed Gupta’s dedication to helping people throughout the pandemic not just in the US but also in India.
