New Delhi, Nov 10: The Samajwadi Party named Dimple Yadav as its candidate on Thursday for the Mainpuri parliamentary seat, following the passing of party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav. The byelection will take place on December 5.

Akhilesh Yadav’s wife Dimple is Mulayam Singh Yadav’s daughter-in-law and the leader of the Samajwadi Party.

“The party declares Dimple Yadav as party candidate of Mainpuri bypoll,” Samajwadi Party said in a tweet.

Notably, Mulayam Singh Yadav, the party’s founder, won the Manipuri seat in 2019 by a margin of little over 94,000 votes. He passed away last month following a protracted illness.

SP stronghold Mainpuri has existed for all time. Mulayam was first elected as an MP from this location in 1996. He ran for the seat three more times, with success: in 2004; in 2009; and in 2019. Tej Pratap Yadav won the seat in the byelection held in 2014.
