Jamshedpur, Nov 14: School children often enjoy Children’s Day with loads of activities on November 14. Meanwhile, the Meherbai Tata Memorial Hospital (MTMH) and Kudy Mahanty Chiren’s Opportunities (KMCO) Trust organised a magic show for children who bravely fought cancer and are free of the disease now on Monday.

About 15 such children from various parts of Jamshedpur and other districts of Jharkhand witnessed this special magic show arranged at the Kudy Mahanty Auditorium in Kadma.

Notably, KMCO has funded the treatment of about 28 children between the age group of three years to 16 years who have been patients of cancer. About 15 of them who were present along with their parents are free of the disease presently.

The programme was attended by KMCO chairperson, Rupa Mahanty; its president Niroop Mahanty; Tata Steel vice president of corporate services Chanakya Chaudhary; social worker Ruchi Narendran; director of MTMH Dr Sujata Mitra; oncologists of MTMH- Dr Tamojit Choudhary and Dr Amitava Upadhyay and other dignitaries of the city.

In 2020, the KMCO Trust and MTMH entered into an agreement under which children from humble communities receive financial support for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. On Monday these children also received gifts from Niroop Mahanty.

“We do not want any parent to suffer the loss of a child. It is for this reason, we entered into this collaboration so that these young little ones can live happy life. They have been so brave that we adults must learn from them,” said Rupa Mahanty.

Dr Mitra went on to share how MTMH has been offering treatment to these little ones even at times when there are limitations and they sometimes fall short of funds. This is where organisations like KMCO offer their support so that these kids receive better treatment. She said that the MTMH also has the facility of patient navigators who guide patients as most of the time they are unaware of the government schemes and facilities available.

Palamu resident Vikas Kumar Vishwakarma, a parent of an eight-year-old cancer survivor son was happy to share his experience and the help he received from the hospital.

“My son was diagnosed with a tumour in 2020. When local doctors failed we were asked to come to MTMH. We not only received monetary help under Mukhyamantri Gambhir Bimari Yojana but also received support from the hospital. My son is free of cancer now. I am thankful to the doctors and the hospital management for the financial and emotional support,” said Vishwakarma who is a mechanic.
