Daltonganj, Nov 21: Government Engineering College (GEC) at Basoura village under Nilamber Pitamberpur (old name Lesliganj) in Palamu district has started functioning from the current academic session 2022-23.

This engineering college is the first state engineering college in Palamu which has already two more engineering colleges- one of DAV on the Betla National Park road and the other of the BJP MLA Ramchander Chandravanshi in Bishrampur block.

Secretary of Technical and Higher Education, Rahul Kumar Purwar, said: “GEC at Lesliganj has started taking admissions in the first year of the academic session 2022 -23. The inaugural admissions are quite encouraging “We have deputed one noted teacher Prof Sanjay Kumar Singh of the BIT Sindri to act as principal in charge of the college.”

“There are bound to be teething troubles for any technical institute in its starting but we are determined to ensure smooth sailing of the academic activities with time,” he added.

When contacted, BIT Sindri Prof Sanjay Kumar Singh said, “Till the third round of counselling of the Jharkhand Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board, 192 admissions in the first year of the academic session 2022-23 have taken place. We have one more round of counselling to go and we are hopeful this new GEC Lesliganj may achieve 200 admissions in its first year.”

The fourth round of counselling which has begun on November 18 will wind up on November 23.

Notably, GEC Lesliganj has begun with 4 disciplines including electrical, civil, computer science and mechanical engineering. There are a total of 349 seats taking 4 disciplines into account together which include a quota for economically weaker sections, persons with disability and a quota for servicing military personnel etc.

Principal in charge of the GEC Lesliganj Prof Singh said, “Under the directive of the state technical, higher education department, I took over the building of this GEC from the NBCC only on November 11.”

He conceded that one faculty each in the 4 disciplines has been deputed from the BIT Sindri till the appointment for the faculties is completed here.

Prof Singh said as the first-year engineering course consists of basic science like mathematics, physics, chemistry, English, graphics etc, these 4 teachers will be imparting lessons online till new arrangements are not made out.

“The state technical higher education department is very keen to put things in order here and whatever resources we have right now, we will be trying to pull it along well in the interest of our students enrolled here and are engineers in making,” added Prof Singh.
