New Delhi, Dec 9: A private member’s bill on the Uniform Civil Code was proposed for introduction in the Rajya Sabha by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Kirodi Lal Meena. Members of the opposition criticised the action and demanded a vote on the proposed Bill.
A private members bill is introduced by a legislator, meaning it has not been tabled on behalf of the Executive.
The UCC wants to govern all citizens of the nation, regardless of their communities, by abolishing personal laws and replacing them with a uniform set of laws that include everything from marriage, adoption, inheritance, succession, and divorce.
Meena submitted a bill in the Upper House that would create a group to draught a UCC. The Bill was introduced by Meena with the intention of being implemented nationwide. A national inspection and investigation commission would be established, according to the proposed law, to create a uniform civil code.
Members of the opposition from the Trinamool Congress, Congress, CPI, and CPI(M) criticised and viewed the bill’s presentation as a strategy to “destoy” the social fabric and national unity in diversity. While Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar called for division and the motion to introduce the Bill on the UCC, they demanded that it be withdrawn.
The Bill was passed with 63 votes in favour and 23 against it.
