New Delhi, Dec 25: After edging Bangladesh by three wickets in the second Test at Mirpur on Sunday, India kept second place in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) points standings.

India successfully defended a difficult 145-run target with an unbroken 71-run stand between Shreyas Iyer (29*) and Ravichandran Ashwin (42*) for the eighth wicket.

India improved its points percentage (PCT) to 58.92 with the 2-0 series victory, surpassing South Africa (55.76) and Sri Lanka (54.55) in the WTC 2021–23 cycle, which concludes in March 2023. Australia is in first place with a PCT score of 76.92.

The outcome of the current Australia-South Africa three-match Test series and the rest of South Africa’s individual campaign will continue to have a significant impact on India’s chances. Australia is almost guaranteed a spot in the championship after recently defeating the West Indies 2-0 and South Africa in the first Test at home.

India still has four Test matches left, starting in February at home against Australia. Four Test matches remain for South Africa, which is now second in the standings. These matches are two away against Australia and two at home against the West Indies.

India and South Africa will likely compete for the second finals slot; both teams must win at least three of their remaining games to stay in the running.
