Patna, Dec 27: Ashish Mandal alias Tinku, son of ruling Janata Dal (United) MLA Narendra Kumar Neeraj alias Gopal Mandal, was arrested in connection with a shooting case, police said on Tuesday.

In Bhagalpur, Bihar, Gopal Mandal is the representative for the Gopalpur district. Savita Devi, a candidate for mayor of Bhagalpur who is supposedly Ashish’s mother, was detained in her office.

Police said that Ashish and his friends attacked four persons, including three family members and the managing director of a public institution with roots in Khagaria.

The MLA’s son and his three companions allegedly opened fire indiscriminately on December 12 due to a land dispute, injuring four people, according to Bhagalpur Superintendent of Police (SSP) Babu Ram.

Due to the unauthorised possession of a 19 Katha land tract, the incident took place under the jurisdiction of the Barari police station. According to the SSP, some 20 individuals, led by Ashish, allegedly attempted to take land belonging to Lal Bahadur Singh, also known as Laddu Shastri. According to SSP, when the owner and his followers objected, the musclemen hit them with sticks and started shooting.

On the basis of Lal Bahadur’s statement, a first information report (FIR) was filed against five named individuals, including the MLA, his son, and 20 unidentified individuals, according to the SSP.

Lal Bahadur claimed in the FIR that the MLA had threatened him over the phone, telling him to leave the property or face serious repercussions.

Following the event, the four stated suspects—Ashish, Dilip Mandal, Dhanraj Yadav, and Sanjiv were the subject of an arrest warrant issued by the chief judicial magistrate of Bhagalpur on December 16.
