Jharkhand: Eight Maoists including three women surrender before police

Ranchi, Jan.4: Eight Maoists including three women surrendered before Jharkhand police today. All are in the age group of 18 to 22. Their duration of association with the extremist group ranges from two to 10 years.  None of them carries any award on them.

Notably, IG (operation) AV Homkar announced the surrender, organising a programme in the official premises of South Chotanagpur Range DIG at Doranda. 

He said all were guerrilla and named in multiple cases of waging war against the state. He informed that all were associated with Maoist Central Committee member Mishir Besra alias Sagar Ji and Patiram Manjhi alias Anal Da.

During the programme, all those who surrendered were present. All were appearing as teenagers and they did not speak anything during the programme.

When asked about the same, I.G (operation) Homkar said though by physical appearance they appear to be teenagers but none of them is teenagers. 

“They are well trained and cases registered against them suggest their dreadedness. The locality from where they belong getting built by a person used to be like this,” Homkar said.

The list of women Maoists surrendered includes Sarita alias Mungli alias Sarita Sardar alias Sanita (20), She is a resident of Raijama under the Kharsawan police station areas of Saraikela-Kharsawan district. 

There are as many as six cases registered against her. The other two women include Somwari Kumari alias Toni (21), a resident of Tamar in Ranchi, and Sanju Purty alias Roshni Purty (19), a resident of Chiriabera in West Singhbhum.

The other five male Maoists who surrendered include Jairam Bodra (21) Martam Angaria (21), Tungir Purty (18), Patar Koda (18) and Kusnu Sirka(22). Bodra, a resident of Mailpi under Sonua police station area of West Singhbhum district is named in as many as 11 cases.

Homkar said those who surrendered will be given all facilities provided under a government scheme to bring Maoists into the mainstream of society. A police official said that the facilities include land, leniency during the trial, vocation training, open jail during trial and loans to start industries.

Earlier, IG Homkar counted the achievements of the Jharkhand police in putting a check on Maoist activities over three years. He said during the last three years, 31 Maoists have been shot dead while 56 surrendered. 

Among those shot dead, there were a few who were carrying awards on their heads and it was the award amount was a total of Rs 44 lakh. Similarly, he said among those who surrendered there were many who were carrying awards and the total amount of awards on them was Rs 1.30 crore.

Explaining the reason behind surrender I.G. Homkar said ‘ attraction of the government’s surrender policy’, ‘exploitation of Maoists in their organisation’ and ‘continuous operation against Maoists across the state’ and ‘recent operation in East Singhbhum area’ among others.
