Jamshedpur, Feb 25: The court of District and Sessions Judge, Anil Kumar Mishra on Saturday convicted former assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Dharmendra Kumar in the sensational Varsha Patel murder case of Telco.
The court will pronounce the term of the sentence on Tuesday.
There were in all nine prosecution witnesses in the case registered with Telco thana on November 18, 2021.
According to the prosecution, the ASI Dharmendra Kumar (36) who was posted at the Sakchi thana had illicit relations with Varsha Patel who was married but was separately in a rented accommodation at South Park locality in Bistupur.
Varsha had another paramour, Jimmy, who had started frequenting her house, making Dharmendra envious. Dharmendra had a number of times quarrelled with Varsha and even assaulted her for giving leverage to Jimmy.
On the evening of November 12, the ASI visited Varsha’s residence and took her along on his bike to his residence in Telco. The agitated ASI had first pushed the young woman against a wall, causing her to fall down. Then he strangulated her to death and later thrust the body in a bag before dumping it in ISWP lake in the Telco area.
The body bag was recovered by the police on the morning of November 18.
According to the prosecution, the family members of Varsha had lodged a missing report with the Bistupur thana on November 13. On the other hand, having murdered the woman, the ASI who is also married had gone over to his native place in Bihar.
The murder victim’s younger sister Jaya who
knew the affair between her sister had identified the body recovered from the lake and the ASI expressed her suspicion about the police officer, leading the police to investigate in the line.
Sub-inspector Sundar Soren of Telco thana who was the investigating officer of the case had arrested Dharmendra from his native place in Bihar.
