New Delhi, March 11: Shubman Gill continued his second century in the longest format of the game on Day 3 of the fourth Test against Australia. Gill was selected to start alongside Rohit Sharma in the third Test at Indore after KL Rahul was benched by the team management due to his subpar play.

In the third Test, Gill was unable to maximise his performance, but in Ahmedabad, he excelled. In red-ball cricket, the teenage opener hit just his second century for India, directing a partnership of more than 100 runs with Cheteshwar Pujara for the third wicket.

Despite scoring his first Test century during the Bangladesh series, Gill was sadly replaced by KL Rahul in the subsequent games. But after Rahul struggled in the first few games against Australia, Gill made a strong comeback in Indore and really delivered in Ahmedabad.

The entire Indian camp rose to their feet in jubilation when Gill scored in the triple digits. But Virat Kohli’s face was one that stood up clearly. The former captain of India applauded for Gill after reaching the goal with a big smile on his face.

But, India was dealt a severe setback immediately following Gill’s century when Todd Murphy removed Cheteshwar Pujara for LBW. India had a score of 188/2 after 63 overs at tea, with Gill and Kohli at the wicket.

The hosts are still 292 runs behind the Steve Smith-captained team.

Cheteshwar Pujara (42) and Gill (103 batting) put together a 113-run partnership before the latter was caught leg-before by spinner Todd Murphy. Australia’s first innings total was 480. The previous dismissal of Rohit Sharma for 35 off the final ball of the 21st over brought an end to their 74-run partnership.
