Ranchi, April 14: Maithili-speaking people in Jharkhand under the aegis of Baba Vidyapati Smarak Samiti will celebrate Janki Navmi, the birth anniversary of Lordess Sita, on April 29.
The decision was taken in a meeting on Thursday, the executive chairman of the Samiti Jayant Jha informed.
It is believed that Lordess Sita, also known as Janki for being the daughter of King Janak, appeared on the ninth day of Vaishak Shukla Paksha on the earth.
According to Valmiki Ramayana, once King Janak was greatly troubled by a severe drought in Mithila, then to get rid of this problem, he was suggested by a sage to perform a yajna and plough the field. The kind ploughed the field after Yagna. While doing so he hit a golden pitcher in the field, from which a beautiful divine girl was found. He adopted her as a daughter. Later she was married to Purushottam Shri Ram in the form of Lord Vishnu’s Ramavatar.
On April 29, Janaki will be worshiped in the office of the committee and in the evening a cultural program will be organized. From April 25, Janaki Chariot will go to every locality of the city to invite people for the programme.
