Ranchi, June 14: A student died after a portion of the Ranchi University Central Library building collapsed today morning.

The deceased was identified as Mantosh Bedia, a resident of Ramgarh. The incident took place when Santosh was parking his bicycle to enter the library as a matter of routine.

“As a portion of the building collapsed the student sustained injuries. Students rushed him to RIMS, where doctors declared him brought dead,” a student said.

The incident angered students and they started a demonstration to protest against the death due to negligence of Ranchi University management. They blocked roads passing through the university campus and demanded immediate action against the erring officials and proper compensation to the victim.

Officer-in-charge of Lalpur police station Mamta Kumari confirmed the incident saying students are waiting for some Ranchi University officials to come for negotiation.

BJP legislature party chief and former chief minister Babulal Marandi expressed his concern over the incident and asked chief minister Hemant Soren to ensure financial assistance to deceased’s family and strict action against the culprits.

“Mantosh Bedia, a resident of Ramgarh, has died a painful death due to falling balcony of Central Library of Ranchi University. I have sympathy for the victim’s family. It is a humble request to the Honorable Chief Minister to ensure financial assistance to the family of the deceased and take strict action against the culprits by forming an inquiry committee. Because it is a case of gross negligence,” he tweeted.
