Dhanbad June 23: The research of IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM), led by Dr Rahul MR, assistant professor in the fuel, mineral and metallurgical engineering department, has placed the institution at the 7th position in the globe for designing high entropy alloys.

Prof Rahul, in his research to use machine learning for alloy designing, has focused on High Entropy Alloys (HEA), a relatively new concept, which uses over-conventional alloys, especially in high-temperature and biomedical applications. High entropy alloys are formed by mixing equal or relatively large proportions of five or more elements.

Prof Rajiv Shekhar, Director of IIT ISM said what is remarkable is that Prof. Rahul’s research was conducted with the help of B Tech students and not the PhD students.

Alloys play a critical role in the industrial sectors ranging from transportation to manufacturing to medical equipment. The use of machine learning is expected to revolutionize the process of alloy designing, reducing their lead time for commercialization. “The design and development of new materials are inevitable for advanced applications, ” said Prof Rahul. He further added that the conventional material development approach requires many experimental trials, resources and time.

Prof Rahul said, recently the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been getting attention in many fields. “We have used the Machine-Learning approach to solve the problems of prediction of phase formation in new alloys, prediction of their mechanical properties, microstructure classification and enhancement of alloys, identifying defects in additive manufacturing conditions, and developing Machine Learning (ML) enabled processing map,” he added.

Prof Rahul said that excerpts of his latest research which began with the B Tech students of his department in 2020 have been published in journals like Scripta Materialia, Computation Material Science and Journal of Alloys and Compounds.

Prof Rahul who joined IIT (ISM) as an assistant professor in July 2000 is working on several ongoing projects including two externally funded projects titled- Machine Learning Enable Framework for the design of new multi-component alloy and the other titled-Development of Microstructure, Property, Processing, Correlations for Nickel-based superalloys.
