Kathua, July 19: In the upper regions of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district on Wednesday, floods and landslides brought on by torrential rains claimed the lives of at least eight people, the police said.
Officials stated that the incident occurred in the Kathua district’s Bani Tehsil’s upper reaches.
According to police reports, a large landslide near the village of Surjan in the Bani tehsil, 250 km from the Kathua headquarters, buried five members of a family alive.
“Five family members inside the house were died,” officials said while adding that three other person were killed in Sera.
Locals helped the police initiate a rescue mission shortly after the tragedy.
Due to the district’s rainfall, Kathua police had earlier in the day issued an advisory. In Jammu & Kashmir, there have been numerous landslides as a result of heavy rainfall.
An official said on Wednesday that the National Highway-44 in the Ramban district was closed owing to falling stones and mudslides.
