190 cases against 162 land mafias in Ranchi, Jharkhand govt informs HC

Ranchi, July 21: The State government today informed the Jharkhand High Court that as many as 190 cases have been registered against 162 land mafias across the city.

The information was given in course of a hearing on a case involving mafias’ bid to  grab former Supreme Court judge Justice M.Y Eqbal’s land in Fatehulla Road under the Lower Bazar police station on June 25. The high court had taken suo-moto cognizance in the matter.

Advocate General Rajiv Ranjan assisted by his junior Piyush Chiresh gave the information based on the affidavits filed by the Ranch SSP and the state home secretary.

The state also informed the HC about the security measures taken in the Jharkhand capital saying as many as 30 PCRs, 62 tiger mobiles, 15 high priority vehicles, 18 Shakti commandos have been deputed and night patrolling is being done.

The advocate general stated that barricading has been put at 17 strategic locations for checking of vehicles. Apart from this, he said 646 CCTV cameras and 536 smart CCTVs have been installed. As many as 118 collar cameras have been provided to traffic personnel, he said.

The court after getting details, asked the state to present a crime report date on the next date of hearing on August 23 and also asked to furnish a report on cases of sexual offence.

Notably, a division bench headed by Justice S Chandrashekhar, while taking suo moto cognizance of a newspaper report had directed the SSP to file his personal affidavit and give details of the cases registered in the district of Ranchi making complaints of the land grabbing nature, status of such complaints and FIRs and the action taken pursuant to such complaints. The affidavits must give details as regard action taken to bust such gangs and arrest the persons behind such incidents, the court had directed.

The high court had also directed the home secretary to file an affidavit giving details of the monthly meetings held in the last six months and the decisions taken in the monthly meetings as regards maintenance of law and order and safety of the common men.
