New Delhi, July 26: The Congress and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) presented notices in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, expressing their intention to move a motion of no-confidence against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government concerning the Manipur issue.
The office of the Lok Sabha Secretary General received a notice from Gaurav Gogoi, the deputy leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha.
Nageshwar Rao, the floor leader for the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), sent the Speaker a separate notice of a no-confidence motion. Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao is in charge of the BRS.
The majority of the government can be contested on the House floor through a no-confidence motion, and if it is approved, the government is forced to quit.
The motion is read aloud in the House if the Lok Sabha Speaker deems it to be in order. He then requests that those in favour of the motion stand. Up to 50 members of the opposition are anticipated to stand.
The BJP government is being cornered on four fronts by the opposition parties, who are attempting to utilise the unrest in Manipur.
Since the opening day of the Parliament’s monsoon session, opposition parties have pushed on PM Modi to address the violence in Manipur. On July 20, the Parliament’s monsoon session officially began.
Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, criticised the opposition leaders on Tuesday for calling for PM Modi to address the current violence in Manipur in the House.
Amid slogans of “Manipur! Manipur!”, Amit Shah said, “Whoever is raising slogans now, neither are they interested in the government nor in cooperation. They are neither interested in Dalits or the welfare of women… I wanna reiterate that I wrote to both leaders of the Houses today that I am ready for a lengthy discussion of any kind.”
On July 20, the monsoon session of Parliament convened amid indignation over a viral video showing two women being paraded naked by a crowd in Manipur.
On July 19, only one day before the start of the Parliament session, the May 4 video went viral.
As they requested a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a discussion on the violence in Manipur, the opposition parties disrupted the session and protested vehemently.
