Ranchi, July 26: A lower court here imposed a Rs 500 fine on Bollywood actress Ameesha Patel after her advocate did not turn up to cross-examine a prosecution witness in a case of cheque bouncing against her.
Imposing the fine, the court of judicial magistrate D N Shukla deferred the trial in the case till August 7.
The situation came after a film producer Ajay Kumar Singh sued Patel after a Rs 2.5 crore cheque issued by her to him bounced. The actress had issued the cheque after Singh mounted pressure on her for the same. Singh mounted pressure after the actress did not work for Singh’s film, Desi Magic, despite accepting an advance amount for the work in 2017.
Earlier On June 21, the court had taken strong exception to her attitude when she did not turn up before the court to perform her show in Mohali.
Following which on July 10, Patel appearing before the court denied the entire allegation levelled against her.
Advocate Jayaprakash argued is appearing on behalf of Patel while advocate Smita Pathak is appearing on behalf of Singh.
Patel started facing trial in the case appearing in person after her attempt failed to get an exemption from personal appearance. On May 5, the high court dismissed her petition and directed her to surrender before the trial court. On June 17, she surrendered before the trial court.
