4 captive elephants get new roof over heads in Betla National Park

Daltonganj, Aug 12: Four captive elephants of the Betla National Park under the Palamu tiger reserve (PTR) today got a new roof over their heads and a comfort giving base on the ground on World Elephant Day which is observed every August 12.

Among the 4 captive elephants, three are females namely Juhi, Sita and Rakhee while the one male Murugan is the offspring of Sita, said PTR deputy director North division P K Jena.

Juhi is one such elephant who still continues to draw the love and affection of the tourists as her running partner Anarkali and she used to ferry tourists every morning, every weather called here elephant ride.

When Anarkali had died, Juhi just did not eat for two days in the mourning for her. She broke a wall too in sheer grief over the death of Anarkali.

Rakhi is an orphan as she was found abandoned more than 15 years ago in the jungles of the PTR. Her mother is said to have died of lightning.

There was a huge elephant Bhairav here which died in an internecine war with another huge tusker right in the region of the Palamu Quila.
