Dhanbad, Aug 14: Ashok Kumar, an assistant professor in the department of mining engineering, IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad has got Institution of Engineers India ( IEI) Young Engineers Award 2023-24 in the mining engineering category.
The award which consists of a plaque and certificate was handed over to Prof Ashok Kumar during the inaugural session of the 33rd National Convention of Mining Engineers held in Bengaluru on August 11.
The Institution of Engineers India (IEI) is the largest multidisciplinary professional body of 15 engineering disciplines and gives engineers a platform to share
professional interest.
Dr Ashok Kumar, graduated in Mining Engineering from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in 2013, M Tech from the Academy of Scientific and Innovation Research in 2015 and finished his PhD from IIT (ISM) in 2021 before joining the institute as an assistant professor in 2022.
Kumar whose areas of specialization include, underground Mining Methods, Strata Rock Mechanics, Numerical Modeling, underground instrumentation & monitoring of strata, Support Design, Rock mass Characterization, FLAC3D and AUTOCAD, has 15 publications in SCI journals, six in non-SCI journals and 21 as conference proceedings.
An IIT ISM official said Prof Kumar has earlier also worked as a trainee scientist (2013) (CSIR-CIMFR), Scientist 1 (December 2015 at National Institute of Rock Mechanics, Bengaluru), Scientist (April 2016 at CSIR-CIMFR)), Senior Scientist (April 2020) (CSIR-CIMFR) before joining IIT (ISM) as an assistant professor in July 2022.
