Kalaburagi, August 19: All bulk waste generators in the city have been urged by Kalaburagi City Corporation (KCC) authorities to ensure proper garbage disposal and they have issued a warning that those who do not heed the warning would face penalties.

The direction is intended for bulk waste generators, specifically restaurants, educational institutions, shopping complexes and malls among others. Bulk waste generators are defined as enterprises that produce garbage in huge amounts.

“All the bulk waste generators in the city are requested not to dispose of garbage ‘unscientifically’ as it is hazardous,” KCC’s environmental engineer, Munaf Patel, said.

“Heavy amount of penalties will be imposed on bulk waste generators if they fail to ensure proper disposal of garbage generated on their respective premises,” said an official on Saturday.

“Recently, we have imposed a Rs 50,000 penalty on the central bus stand for burning the garbage. So they have admitted politely and they have assured that they’ll not repeat it again,” said Munaf Patel.

A bulk waste generator is defined by the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, as any building used by a central government department or undertaking, a state government department or undertaking, local bodies, public sector undertakings, private companies, hospitals, nursing homes, schools, colleges, universities, other educational institutions, etc., with an average waste generation rate exceeding 100kg per day.

An earlier decision by the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) to add water fines to the challans issued to bulk waste generators (BWGs) who violated waste management standards.
