New Delhi, Oct 6: The Supreme Court on Friday announced its approval for the appointment of an interpreter to facilitate sign language translation for lawyers with hearing impairments.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud stated he wanted to have a sign language interpreter present during Constitution bench hearings.

During the virtual session, a sign language interpreter was observed translating the proceedings of the highest court to lawyer Sarah Sunny, who has a hearing impairment.

The CJI opened the court’s sessions by saying, “We have an interpreter today for Sarah. In fact, we are thinking that for the constitution bench hearings, we will have an interpreter so everyone can follow”.

In a case involving the rights of PwDs, Sarah was heard on September 22 by a bench presided over by the CJI via sign language interpreter Saurav Roy Chowdhury.

A court-appointed Indian Sign Language (ISL) interpreter had been requested by Sarah in an earlier application she had submitted to the Supreme Court Registry.
