Kohima, Oct 14: The Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NIMSR), the first medical college in Nagaland, was officially inaugurated by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Saturday. The inauguration of the college took place in Kohima, the state capital, with Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio present at the ceremony.

The Nagaland University-affiliated NIMSR Kohima offers 100 MBBS seats, 85 of which are reserved for Nagaland residents and 15 for students of other states.

After the induction program last month, 85 MBBS students from Nagaland and an additional six students from other states were enrolled and commenced their MBBS classes at NIMSR.

Speaking at the occasion, Health Minister Mandaviya stated, “NIMSR is not just a medical college, it is also a research institute. It will not only fulfil the purpose of imparting medical education but will also address the health issues of the Naga people.”

The Union Health Minister exhorted the students and other participants to broaden their research’s application beyond national boundaries. “We must encash on opportunities abroad as well,” he said.

Additionally, he mentioned that the Union Government had begun offering foreign language courses in several medical educational institutions so that students would have an advantage in finding employment overseas.

Mandaviya emphasized that the Union Government is committed to enhancing medical, nursing, and pharmacy education in the nation as part of its comprehensive efforts to foster the development and growth of the healthcare sector in India.

With special attention to the expansion of Jan Aushadhi Kendras, which offer medicines at significantly subsidised rates he stated, “The aim is to ensure that each citizen of India is able to get access to affordable and accessible healthcare across the country.”
